Frequently asked questions

The swim starts from the water’s edge at Theatre By The Lake Keswick. The bike course is one continuous ride around the towns of West Cumbria. The run is 5 laps around Keswick.

The race will start at 6am

Swim 2.4 miles (3.8 kilometers)
Bike 112 miles (180 kilometers)
Run 26.2 miles (42,2 kilometers)

Entries are open to individuals or relay teams (one swimmer, one cyclist, one runner). Entries are taken online with payment by credit/debit card. No other payment option is available.
Once the entry process is completed and payment processed, you will receive a confirmation email which details your race entry.

The entry fee includes:

  • All the Race Organisation required for The Lakesman Triathlon including transition area, swim course, swim safety cover, medical cover, traffic management for but not excluding road closures, stewards and volunteers.
  • Race entry into The Lakesman
    – Race day nutrition at the aid stations
  • A Finisher T-Shirt
  • A Finisher-Medal

Age group is determined by age on 31.12.2019

No, the athlete racing must register and rack their own bike/bags. Photo ID will be requested in registration.

Yes, athletes must be 18 on race day.

You will be given coloured bags when you register for your bike and run gear. Your bike shoes can be attached to the pedals if you wish. No items are permitted to be in transition other than items placed in your coloured bags and racked accordingly.
Bike Gear Bag, this bag is for kit you need for your cycle leg, including your helmet (you can have your helmet on the bike). You will enter the bikebag area upon entering the transition, here you will change and then head to collect your bike.

Run Gear Bag, put all the kit you need for your run in this bag. Once you have racked your bike you will enter the run bag area, here you will change and head to the run course.

Clean Gear/finish bag is for the clothing that you require after the race. This bag will be in the athletes transition area and available to collect as soon as you finish the race.

Bikes, and bike and run bags must be racked at the same time according to the race weekend schedule.

When you come to rack, your bike, your helmet and bags must have your race numbers securely applied to them. You must have your helmet on with the strap fastened and be wearing your race number.

You will have access to your bike and run bags on race morning and you can access your bike.

You must have your helmet fastened before removing your bike from the rack and keep it fastened until you have placed your bike back on the rack having finished the course.

Clean gear/finish bag will be handed over at the transition area.


The swim is a mass start from the lake shore. Please consider your swim ability when choosing your start position.

The swim is one clockwise lap and the cut off time to be out of the water is 2 hours 20 minutes after the race start.

There is a 100m run to reach transition.

Wetsuits are compulsory unless the water temperature exceeds 24.5 degrees. British Triathlon guidance on temperature/distance will be followed.

This is done entirely at your own risk and the organisors advise you to refrain from this practice.
Yes, depending on water temperature.
If you feel the need, please turn on your back and raise an arm in the air to attract attention from the swim safety crew. There will be lifeguards on hand to check that you are ok and assist if necessary. Note that a triathlon wetsuit provides buoyancy and you would be able to float with minimal effort should you need to take a few seconds to regain your composure.


The Bike course is 112 miles. There are regular Aid Stations Ipods, MP3 players, cameras, mobile phones etc are not permitted on the course. Your race number must be worn on your back for the cycle leg
Yes, however we strongly advice use of a road or time trial bike to enable you to meet the cut off times.
Should you wish to change any information to your registration, please send an email with the following information to:

  • Information to be changed

You will receive an email when the alterations have been made.

Yes, one swimmer, one cyclist and one runner.


The run course of The Lakesman Triathlon 2018 is 42,2 km with 5 loops, with 3 Aid Stations per lap Ipods, MP3 players, mobile phones etc are not permitted on the course Your race number must be worn on your front.
If you have to pull out from the race before finishing, you must inform one of our referees or officials directly. The organization is responsible for every athlete from the start to the end of the race. If you do not inform about your withdrawal, we will start searching for you; for this reason, it is very important for us to know about your withdrawal immediately.
Yes, this will be directed by a race official in the finish chute. Please be aware that if the finish chute is congested at that time you may be held back to allow other competitors before your supporters are allowed into the area.
  • Swim – 2:20hrs after race start. (08:20am)
  • Bike – 10:00hrs after race start (16:00pm)
  • Run – 16.45hrs after race start (22:45pm)
The race finishes at 22:45 any athletes still on the course can finish but will not register a finish time in the race results.

We strongly urge all spectators to follow instruction in the athlete guide for recommended viewing places. Entrants are asked to encourage their friends and family not to try and follow them on the course; this is in the interests of the athlete’s and other road users safety.
